Itinerary

Arrive at Paro Airport and then proceed to the capital city, Thimphu, which is situated at an altitude of 2320 meters (7656 feet) above sea level. The flight to Bhutan offers spectacular views of the Himalayan mountains, including a possible sighting of Mt. Everest (8848 meters, 29,198 feet) and other ranges, weather permitting. Upon arrival, you will be greeted by your Bhutanese representative and driven to Thimphu.

On your way to Thimphu, you'll visit Tamchhog Lhakhang, a temple built by Thang Thong Gyalpo of Tibet, known for constructing numerous iron bridges in Bhutan.

You'll also visit Kuenselcholing View Point, offering a panoramic view of the Thimphu valley, where you can pay your respects to the largest Buddha statue in Bhutan and take in the scenic beauty.

Another stop will be at the Memorial Chorten, built in 1974 as a tribute to the third King of Bhutan, King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, who is revered as the modernizer of Bhutan.

In the morning, take a hike to Cheri Monastery, which includes passing through Dodina and Jigme Dorji Wildlife Sanctuary. This monastery, built in 1620 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, was the first monastic body established in Bhutan. Keep an eye out for bird species like Mrs. Gould's Sunbird, Yellow-browed Tit, Yellow-rumped Honeyguide, Long-billed Thrush, and Ultramarine Flycatcher during your hike.

Visit a paper factory in Thimphu, where the tradition of handmade papermaking, dating back to the 8th century, is preserved as part of Bhutan's cultural identity. Explore the weekend market, which is bustling with activity every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, resembling the lively street markets in cities like London.

In the morning, embark on a scenic drive towards Punakha, located at an altitude of 2500 meters (9240 feet) above sea level. Along the way, you'll pass Dochula Pass (3140 meters, 10,362 feet), offering a breathtaking panoramic view of the Himalayan mountain range, especially on clear winter days. The Druk Wangyal Chortens, a collection of 108 stupas built by Her Majesty Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck, enhances the beauty of this location.

You'll also hike to Chimi Lhakhang, the Temple of Fertility, built by Lam Drukpa Kuenley (The Divine Madman) in 1499. It's known for the wooden phalluses often found hanging in houses and painted on walls to ward off evil spirits.

In the morning, visit Punakha Dzong, a remarkable fortress built in 1637 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel, strategically located between the rivers Mo Chu (Female River) and Pho Chu (Male River), and once used as the king's seat.

Later, drive to Paro and visit Rimpung Dzong, also known as the "fortress of the heap of jewels," built-in 1644. It is a stunning example of Bhutanese architecture and serves as a backdrop for the Tsechu festival, where one of the oldest Thongdol (gigantic scroll paintings) is ceremonially unfurled.

You will also explore Kichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan's most sacred and oldest temples, dating back to the 7th century and built by Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo. Overnight in Paro.

Begin your day with a hike to Taktshang Monastery, also known as Tiger's Nest. Perched 800 meters (2640 feet) up a steep cliff, this iconic cultural site was tragically consumed by fire in 1998 but has since been meticulously restored. According to legend, Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava), the great tantric master, flew on the back of a tigress to this location in the 8th century.

Visit a farmhouse to experience the hospitality of Paro farmers and gain insight into their daily lives. Bhutanese farmhouses are traditionally built, two to three stories high, with colorful decorations. You may even have the opportunity to take a hot stone bath in the farmhouse. Stroll through the town of Paro and immerse yourself in the local way of life. Overnight in Paro.
