Makalu Base Camp trek has earned its popularity for its isolation and wilderness as it takes us deep into the high Himalayas and remains one of Nepal's most unfrequented trekking routes. This region hardly finds any modern facilities and amenities, but the stunning natural surroundings and rich nature abound in this region will surely mesmerize us. Makalu Base Camp is an ideal choice for passionate trekkers and nature enthusiasts who seek relief and tranquility in pristine natural habitat and those who wish to keep away from crowds.

     

    Our journey begins with an hour-long flight to Tumlingtar, whereas the actual trek starts from Chichila (a 3-hour drive from Tumlingtar). The arduous tour has ascending or descending trails with rare flat walking sections. The lower reaches of the course are renowned for their lushness with verdant rhododendron forests. In contrast, the upper reaches comprise polished granite cliffs capped by hanging glaciers overflowing with waterfalls. As we ascend, we rise from the lowland of Tumlingtar onto one of the highest base camps at almost 5000 meters.

    Itinerary

    Upon your arrival at Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport, you will be welcomed by our representative and transferred to your hotel. You can rest and relax after your journey and prepare for the trek ahead.

    In the afternoon, you will have a trip briefing and finalize your trek preparations.

    You will take a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar, which offers panoramic views of the Himalayas. From Tumlingtar, you will drive to Chichira, a small village situated at an altitude of 1,980 meters. The drive takes approximately 9-10 hours.

    Leaving Chichira, you start your trek and head toward Num. The trail passes through terraced fields, forests, and traditional villages. Num, situated at an altitude of 1,560 meters, is a small village with stunning mountain views.

    On this day, you trek from Num to Seduwa. The trail descends steeply through dense forests and crosses several suspension bridges. Seduwa, located at an altitude of 1,500 meters, is a Sherpa village where you can experience the local culture.

    Continuing your trek, you head from Seduwa to Tashigaon. The trail passes through beautiful rhododendron forests and offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. Tashigaon, situated at an altitude of 2,100 meters, is the last permanent settlement on the trail.

    Leaving Tashigaon, you trek towards Khongma Danda. The trail gradually ascends through alpine forests and meadows. Khongma Danda, located at an altitude of 3,500 meters, offers spectacular views of Makalu and other Himalayan peaks.

    This day is reserved for acclimatization to the high altitude. You can rest and explore the surrounding area, or take a short hike to higher elevations to aid in acclimatization.

    Leaving Khongma Danda, you trek to Dobate. The trail takes you through rhododendron and juniper forests and offers breathtaking views of the mountains. Dobate is situated at an altitude of 3,500 meters.

    Continuing your trek, you head from Dobate to Yangri Kharka. The trail takes you through scenic landscapes, yak pastures, and alpine meadows. Yangri Kharka, located at an altitude of 3,557 meters, serves as your overnight stop.

    Continuing your descent, you head from Seduwa to Num. The trail retraces your earlier steps, offering familiar sights and allowing you to reflect on the journey so far.

    Leaving Num, you trek back to Tumlingtar. The trail gradually descends, and you can enjoy the final views of the mountains before reaching Tumlingtar. The trek takes approximately 6-7 hours.

    You take a short 50-minute flight from Tumlingtar to Kathmandu. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, you can rest, relax, and explore the city or engage in some souvenir shopping.

    This marks the end of your trekking adventure. Our representative will transfer you to the airport for your final departure. You can fly onward to your next destination or return to your home country with wonderful memories of your Makalu Base Camp trek.
