The Journey to the Historic Heart of Gorkha

Your adventure begins with a scenic 8 to 9-hour drive from the bustling streets of Kathmandu to the legendary village of Barpak. As we leave the valley, the road winds along the Trishuli and Daraudi Rivers, offering glimpses of terraced hillsides and the snow-capped peaks of the Ganesh Himal in the distance.

Barpak (1,920 m | 6,299 ft) is not just a destination; it is a landmark of Nepalese bravery. Known as the home of the late Captain Gaje Ghale, a recipient of the prestigious Victoria Cross, this village is deeply rooted in the history of the British Gurkha army. As the epicenter of the 2015 earthquake, Barpak today stands as a symbol of resilience, featuring unique stone-roofed houses and a warm, welcoming Gurung community.

Upon arrival, you will be escorted to an authentic local homestay. This is your first opportunity to experience the farm-to-table lifestyle of the Gorkha region.

A Walk Through the Soul of the Gurung Highlands

After a hearty organic breakfast in Barpak, we begin our trek toward the equally iconic village of Laprak. The trail today is a beautiful immersion into the high-altitude geography of the Gorkha region. You will traverse ridges that offer expansive views of the lush Daraudi River valley and the towering peaks of Buddha Himal and Shringi Himal.

Laprak (2,200 m | 7,217 ft) is a legendary settlement perched on a steep hillside. Historically known as a gateway for the more challenging Rupina La Pass trek, Laprak offers a deep dive into the resilient spirit of the Gurung people. The village is unique for its two distinct settlements the old village and the newly constructed integrated settlement built after the 2015 earthquake. Spending the evening here allows you to witness traditional weaving, stone masonry, and the daily rhythms of Himalayan life.

Ascending into the High Alpine Pastures

As the morning sun illuminates the valley, you’ll wake up to crisp mountain air and stunning views of the surrounding Gorkha hills. Today’s journey takes you higher as we leave the permanent settlements behind and climb toward the serene alpine meadows of Nambai Kharka.

The trail is a natural wonder, winding through dense forests of oak and vibrant rhododendrons. As you gain altitude, the air becomes fresher and the views of the Manaslu and Ganesh Himal ranges grow even more majestic. Nambai Kharka (2,915 m | 9,563 ft) is a traditional seasonal pasture used by the Laprak villagers for cattle herding. It is a place of absolute peace, far from the modern world, offering a raw and spiritual connection to the Himalayas.

To honor the purity of this high-altitude pasture, you will enjoy fresh, vegetarian meals prepared by your hosts, ensuring you are light and energized for tomorrow’s sunrise summit.

The 360-Degree Himalayan Sunrise & Descent to Cultural Heritage

Today is the defining highlight of your Lower Manaslu adventure. We begin with a pre-dawn hike to the summit of Dharche Danda (3,220 m | 10,498 ft), a sacred hilltop and the highest point of the trek. As the first rays of the sun hit the horizon, you will witness a breathtaking 180 to 360-degree panorama of over 20 snow-capped giants. The Mountain View Includes:

          • Mt. Manaslu (8,163m) – The world’s 8th highest peak in its full glory.

          • Annapurna Range – Annapurna I, II, and South.

          • Ganesh Himal Range – A spectacular wall of white peaks.

          • Peak 29, Buddha Himal, and even distant glimpses of the Langtang range.

After soaking in the views and capturing world-class photography, we begin a scenic downhill trek through lush rhododendron and oak forests. The trail leads us to Tallo Thotneri (1,650 m | 5,413 ft), a charming village that showcases the harmonious lifestyle of the local communities. You will spend the evening in a traditional homestay, experiencing the quiet beauty of rural Gorkha life.

A Spiritual Journey through Sita Cave and Diverse Cultural Landscapes

The penultimate day of your journey begins with a gentle descent through picturesque hills and dense, moss-covered forests. Leaving Tallo Thotneri, the trail winds past several remote hamlets where the sounds of mountain birds and distant waterfalls provide a peaceful soundtrack to your walk.

The centerpiece of today's trek is a visit to the sacred Sita Cave (1,165 m). Located about 1.8 km from Tallo Thotneri and hidden within a thick forest, this deep natural cave holds profound religious significance for Hindu pilgrims. Legend speaks of its ancient spiritual power, and the atmosphere inside is one of absolute tranquility. Exploring its chambers offers a unique subterranean contrast to the high ridges you conquered earlier in the week.

After your visit to the cave, the trail continues to Deurali (1,300 m | 4,265 ft). This charming village is a melting pot of Nepalese ethnicities, where Gurung, Magar, and other communities live in perfect harmony. It is the perfect place to celebrate your final night on the trail, reflecting on the journey from the historic stone houses of Barpak to the spiritual depths of the Gorkha forests.

Farewell to the Hills & Return to the Vibrant Capital

Your Himalayan journey concludes with a final breakfast in the peaceful village of Deurali. After bidding farewell to your local hosts, we board our vehicle for the approximately 7 to 8-hour drive back to Kathmandu. The route takes us through the winding mountain roads of Gorkha, eventually joining the Prithvi Highway, where you can enjoy the final views of the Trishuli River and the terraced hillsides.

The Gorkha Cultural Extension (Optional): For those who wish to dive deeper into Nepal’s royal history, you have the option to visit Gorkha Palace (Gorkha Durbar) and the vibrant Gorkha Bazaar. Perched on a high ridge, the palace is the ancestral home of the Shah Dynasty and offers a commanding view of the entire valley. You can choose to extend your stay by one night in Gorkha to explore the Gorkha Museum and the 1,500-step climb to the fortress before heading back to the capital.

Upon arrival in Kathmandu, All Nepal Hiking will escort you to your hotel. In the evening, we will gather for a celebratory Farewell Dinner, where you will be presented with your Trek Completion Certificate, a perfect end to your Gorkha adventure.

Today marks the final day of your 8-day Lower Manaslu adventure with All Nepal Hiking. After a final breakfast at your hotel in Kathmandu, the morning is yours to spend at leisure. You can use this time for some last-minute souvenir shopping in Thamel, visiting local boutiques for pashminas and handicrafts, or simply relaxing in a rooftop café.

Option 1: Final Departure Approximately three hours before your scheduled international flight, our representative will arrive at your hotel to provide a private transfer to Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM). Best Time to Trek Dharche Hill Trek

The Dharche Hill Trek is a rare and versatile destination in Nepal that remains accessible nearly all year round, though the peak experiences are found during the Spring (March–May) and Autumn (September–November) seasons.

During the spring months, the trails between Barpak and Laprak are transformed by blooming rhododendrons and wild orchids, creating a vibrant landscape set against the backdrop of the snow-capped Manaslu and Ganesh Himal ranges.

Autumn is widely considered the prime window for mountain photography, as the post-monsoon air is crystal clear, offering the sharpest and most stable panoramic views of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Machapuchare.

Because the trek reaches a moderate maximum altitude of 3,220 meters, it is an exceptional choice for a winter trek (December–February). Unlike the extreme high-altitude routes that face heavy snow and sub-zero temperatures, the Lower Manaslu region remains manageable and mild, making it perfect for beginner and moderate trekkers who wish to avoid the crowds.Even in the heart of winter, the days are typically sunny and the skies are often at their clearest, providing high-definition vistas of the 8,000-meter giants.

Even during the monsoon (June–August), the region offers a unique perspective for those interested in Himalayan agrotourism, as the terraced fields turn a brilliant emerald green and the local waterfalls along the Daraudi River are at their most powerful.

Whether you are seeking the floral beauty of spring, the crisp clarity of autumn, or the peaceful solitude of winter, the Dharche Hill Trek provides a holistic and rewarding adventure in every season.

                  Dharche Danda Trek Difficulty

The Dharche Danda Trek is categorized as easy to moderate, making it an ideal choice for first-time trekkers, families, or those seeking a shorter Himalayan escape without the extreme physical demands of high-altitude circuits. Because the maximum elevation is 3,220 meters (10,498 ft), the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is minimal, allowing for a more relaxing and enjoyable journey through the Lower Manaslu region.

The terrain offers a diverse trekking experience: lower elevations near Barpak often feature well-paved stone stairs and village paths, while the upper sections toward Nambai Kharka consist of more rugged mud and rocky trails. While no advanced technical mountaineering gear or specialized training is required, a basic level of physical fitness will enhance your enjoyment of the daily 4–6 hour hikes.

This beginner-friendly trekking route provides the perfect balance of manageable physical challenge and high-reward Himalayan landscapes, making it one of the most accessible ways to witness 8,000-meter peaks like Mt. Manaslu up close.

Whether you are navigating the lush rhododendron forests or the traditional terraced fields of Gorkha, the Dharche Danda Trek difficulty is perfectly tuned for those who want a rewarding adventure that prioritizes cultural immersion and natural beauty over extreme physical endurance. With All Nepal Hiking, our professional guides ensure a steady pace and provide all necessary support, ensuring this moderate Nepal trek is a successful and memorable milestone for every adventurer.

                  Accommodation Authentic Village Homestays

Unlike the commercial tea houses of the Everest region, the Lower Manaslu Trek features true homestays. You are welcomed as a member of the family, providing an intimate look into the Nepalese village lifestyle.

                  • The Rooms: Accommodations are simple, clean, and cozy. You will typically stay in traditional stone houses with wooden interiors. Beds are usually twin-sharing with warm blankets provided, though using your own sleeping bag (provided free by All Nepal Hiking) adds an extra layer of comfort.

                  • Facilities: Facilities are basic but functional. Most homestays offer shared bathrooms and squat  toilets. In villages like Barpak and Laprak, you may have access to hot showers (sometimes via solar power or bucket water) and limited electricity for charging devices.

                  • Cultural Experience: Evenings are often spent around the kitchen fire, where you can watch the Rodi (community gathering) or enjoy traditional Gurung and Magar cultural dances. It is an incredible way to learn about the history of the Gorkha soldiers and local animist traditions.

                  Food Organic & Farm-to-Table

The food on the Manaslu Dharche Danda Trek is fresh, organic, and sourced directly from the terraced fields you walk past.

                  • Dal Bhat (The Trekker's Power): The staple meal is Dal Bhat Tarkari (rice, lentil soup, and seasonal vegetable curry). Because it is made fresh and offers unlimited refills, it is the best fuel for hiking. In Gorkha, the Achar (pickle) is often made from local mountain herbs, giving it a unique zing.

                  • Local Specialties: Depending on the season, you can try:

                    • Dhindo: A traditional nutritious mash made from buckwheat or millet flour.

                    • Gundruk: Fermented leafy greens, often served as a tangy soup.

                    • Local Bread: Freshly made Sel Roti (rice flour donuts) or Chapati.

                  • Hydration: You’ll be served plenty of local tea (black, milk, or ginger). We recommend drinking boiled or filtered water; your guide will help ensure your water is safe to drink.

                  • Breakfast: Typically includes eggs (boiled or omelets), porridge, or Tibetan bread served with local honey or jam.

                  Why it's a Holistic Experience

Eating and sleeping in these homes directly supports the local economy of Gorkha. Most of the ingredients from the millet in the bread to the potatoes in the curry are grown right in the village. This sustainable agrotourism model ensures that your trek leaves a positive footprint while providing you with the most authentic Nepalese culinary experience possible.

If you have dietary restrictions (vegan, gluten-free), our guides communicate directly with the host families to ensure your meals are prepared safely and deliciously.
