About Dharmashala (Larkya Phedi)

Dharmashala is a seasonal, high-altitude settlement rather than a permanent village, serving as the final basecamp stop before crossing the formidable Larkya La Pass. Comprising roughly five basic stone and timber teahouses, accommodations here are very simple, and rooms are often shared among trekkers due to limited space.

Because resources are scarce, rooms lack electrical outlets; lighting is generally restricted to the communal dining hall, making a headlamp and a power bank or portable solar charger essential items for your pack. Your All Nepal Hiking team will emphasize early hydration, warm nutrient-rich meals, and an early bedtime tonight to rest up for tomorrow's pre-dawn pass crossing.

What is the Manaslu Circuit Trek?

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is a restricted-area high-altitude hiking route that circles Mount Manaslu (8,163 m / 26,781 ft), the world's eighth-highest mountain. Located within the Manaslu Conservation Area in Nepal, this remote expedition combines pristine wilderness, dramatic glacier valleys, and deep Tibetan Buddhist culture.

      • The Highest Point: Crossing the legendary Larkya La Pass at 5,106 meters (16,752 feet), one of the most challenging and scenic mountain passes in the Himalayas.

      • Cultural Immersion: Passing through remote mountain settlements like Lho, Samagaun, and Samdo, featuring ancient monasteries, mani walls, and traditional Tibetan-influenced communities.

      • Stunning Scenery: Walking alongside the roaring Budhi Gandaki River across high suspension bridges, with close-up views of giants like Himlung Himal, Cheo Himal, and Himal Chuli.

      • Off-the-Beaten-Path Experience: Enjoying a quieter, less commercial alternative to classic routes like Everest Base Camp or the Annapurna Circuit.

Mount Manaslu: The World's Eighth-Highest Peak & Spiritual Giant

Standing tall at 8,163 meters (26,781 ft), Mount Manaslu is the world's eighth-highest mountain and the majestic focal point of the Manaslu Circuit Trek in Nepal. Located within the remote Mansiri Himal range in west-central Nepal, it forms a natural boundary between the Gorkha and Manang districts, drawing adventurers seeking authentic restricted area trekking in Nepal and untouched wilderness.

Known locally as Kampunge or Kutang, the name Manaslu comes from the Sanskrit word Manasa, meaning "mind" or "soul". Widely revered as the "Mountain of the Spirit," it holds deep sacred meaning for travelers drawn to cultural Himalayan journeys, ancient monasteries, and spiritual mountain landscapes.

The mountain is surrounded by massive glacial networks, including the powerful Larkya Glacier and Pungyen Glacier. It is directly linked to top trek highlights like Larkya La Pass (5,106 m), Birendra Lake, and the culturally rich Nubri Valley—making it an essential destination for high-altitude trekking in the Manaslu Conservation Area.

For mountaineers, the standard Manaslu expedition climbing route ascends the technical northeast face over steep ice slopes and crevasses, serving as a major training objective for technical 8,000-meter peaks. Combining Tibetan Buddhist culture, regulated permit preservation, and world-class scenery, Mount Manaslu remains a top choice for Nepal trekking packages and 14-day Manaslu Circuit itineraries.

      Alternative Manaslu Trekking Routes

The Manaslu Conservation Area offers several alternative routes and side variations, giving travelers flexible options based on time constraints, fitness levels, or a desire for deeper cultural exploration.

Short Manaslu Circuit Trek (10–12 Days)

This condensed itinerary is designed for trekkers with limited time who still want to experience the complete high-altitude circuit. Covering roughly 160 kilometers, the route starts from Machha Khola and moves efficiently through key points like Jagat, Deng, Namrung, Samagaun, and Samdo before summiting the Larkya La Pass at 5,106 meters and descending to Tilije. Optional side excursions to Birendra Lake and Manaslu Base Camp can still be incorporated into the schedule for extra glacier views.

Manaslu Base Camp Trek (8–10 Days)

This specialized, high-altitude focused alternative emphasizes exploring the glacial zone directly beneath Mount Manaslu without crossing the strenuous Larkya La Pass. The trail leads through Samagaun, Samdo, and Dharmasala, allowing trekkers to hike up to Manaslu Base Camp at 4,800 meters and surrounding high viewpoints, making it ideal for those seeking intense alpine scenery in a shorter timeframe.

Tsum Valley Trek (5–7 Days / Extended up to 14 Days)

Known as a sacred hidden Himalayan basin, the Tsum Valley is a culturally rich route that can be explored independently or combined with the main Manaslu Circuit. Tucked along a secluded enclave, the valley is celebrated for its ancient Tibetan Buddhist monasteries such as Mu Gompa and Rachen Gompa, meditation caves, mani walls, and traditional mountain villages, offering a peaceful trekking experience with fewer crowds and deep spiritual heritage.

      Manaslu Circuit via Lho Route

This subtle variation diverges slightly from the standard valley floor to provide an immersive cultural trekking experience through upper Himalayan hamlets. The trail guides hikers through Lho, Shyala, and neighboring villages where Tibetan-influenced traditions, ancient architecture, and daily monastic life remain exceptionally well preserved, offering remarkable sunrise photography and close-up angles of Mount Manaslu.

      Combined Manaslu and Annapurna Trek

Designed for experienced endurance hikers seeking a multi-week expedition, this long-distance route links two of Nepal's most legendary mountain regions. The journey takes trekkers through the entire Manaslu Circuit, over the Larkya La Pass, down through the Marsyangdi Valley, and onward to connect with the Annapurna Circuit Trek, transitioning through environments that range from lush subtropical river gorges to high-altitude alpine deserts.

Manaslu Circuit Trek Distance And Terrain

The Manaslu Circuit Trek length spans approximately 177 to 180 kilometers (110 miles) in total, requiring a fit hiker to walk between 5 and 7 hours each day on average. The terrain follows a well-trodden, non-technical path all the way from the subtropical river valleys to the high alpine zone. While there is no technical rock climbing, scrambling, or mountaineering gear required, the trek involves continuous steep ascents, endless stone staircases, and uneven, rocky ground.

Navigating the trail comes with simple mountain safety rules, such as always stepping to the inside wall of the trail when passing oncoming yak herds to avoid being pushed toward cliff edges. Using trekking poles is highly recommended to relieve knee strain during long descents and to provide stability on loose, high-altitude moraines.

The most challenging section of the route is the ascent to Larkya La Pass (5,106m / 16,752ft). The approach climbs steeply from Dharmasala over icy, snow-covered, or scree-filled terrain where micro-crampons are often useful for extra grip. Although strenuous due to the thin air and freezing pre-dawn temperatures, the pass is non-hazardous and delivers sweeping panoramic views of Mount Manaslu (8,163m), Cheo Himal, Himal Chuli, and Himlung Himal.

Lower elevations feature warm daytime conditions around 20°C (68°F), while high-altitude nights routinely drop below freezing. As you hike past Lho village into the Nupri region, the surrounding culture transforms completely into an authentic Tibetan Buddhist landscape filled with ancient monasteries, fluttering prayer flags, and traditional stone-house settlements.

Must-Visit Landmarks on the Manaslu Circuit Trek

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is celebrated for its blend of high-altitude natural wonders and ancient Tibetan Buddhist heritage. Here are the top landmark highlights along the Manaslu trek route:

Iconic High Pass & Mountain Viewpoints

      • Larkya La Pass (5,106 m / 16,752 ft): The highest elevation and physical climax of the trek. Marking the transition from the Gorkha district to the Annapurna region, this iconic pass offers 360-degree views of Himlung Himal, Cheo Himal, Kang Guru, Annapurna II, and Mount Manaslu.

      • Manaslu Base Camp (4,800 m / 15,748 ft): A popular side trek from Samagaun. Located directly beneath the majestic face of Mount Manaslu (8,163 m)—the world's eighth-highest peak—it provides close-up views of active icefalls and mountaineering routes.

      Cultural Villages & Monasteries

      • Samagaun Village (3,530 m / 11,581 ft): The cultural center of the Nubri Valley. Nestled at the foot of Mt. Manaslu, this stone-built Tibetan village serves as the main altitude acclimatization hub for side hikes to Birendra Lake and Manaslu Base Camp.

      • Lho Village & Ribung Gompa (3,180 m / 10,433 ft): Famous for providing the first clear, unobstructed view of Mount Manaslu’s twin peaks. Perched above the village is Ribung Gompa, an ancient monastery housing young monks and traditional prayer wheels.

      • Samdo Village (3,875 m / 12,713 ft): The last permanent settlement before crossing the high pass. Located near the Tibetan border, Samdo is known for traditional yak herding, Mani walls, and preserved trans-Himalayan trade culture.

      Natural Wonders & Alpine Campsites

      • Birendra Lake (3,691 m / 12,110 ft): A turquoise glacial lake situated a short hike from Samagaun. Formed by the melting Manaslu Glacier, its mirror-like waters offer exceptional high-altitude photography.

      • Budhi Gandaki River Gorge: A dramatic canyon carved by roaring river rapids, featuring deep forest tracks, cascading waterfalls, and soaring suspension bridges connecting the lower trail settlements.

      • Dharmasala / Larke Phedi (4,460 m / 14,632 ft): The final high-camp landmark before Larkya La Pass. This stark alpine valley provides crucial shelter and acclimatization for trekkers setting off on early-morning pass crossings.

      • Bhimtang Valley (3,590 m / 11,778 ft): A valley that opens up immediately after descending Larkya La Pass. Surrounded by pine forests, lateral moraines, and views of Manaslu’s western face, it is an essential rest stop before joining the Annapurna Circuit trail at Dharapani.

      Manaslu Circuit Trek Permit Cost

Navigating the necessary permits is the first essential step before embarking on the remote Manaslu Circuit Trek in Nepal. Because this region borders Tibet and passes through protected ecological zones, trekking without official permits is strictly illegal.

Travelers must carry four mandatory documents to clear checkpoints from Jagat to Dharapani. Fortunately, the Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) card is not required for the standard Manaslu Circuit Trek, simplifying the booking process.

Mandatory Permit and Local Fees For Manaslu Nepal

      • Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (RAP): Issued exclusively by the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu through registered trekking agencies. Under the latest government regulations, individual foreign trekkers can obtain a solo permit as long as they are accompanied by a licensed local guide.

      • Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP): Managed by the National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC), this permit funds trail maintenance, wildlife protection (such as the Snow Leopard and Red Panda), and community development across the valley.

      • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP): Required because the final descent past Larkya La Pass enters the Annapurna region before ending at Dharapani and Besisahar.

      • Chumnubri Rural Municipality Entry Fee: A local government entry fee collected in cash at the Jagat checkpoint to support local trail upkeep and emergency rescue infrastructure.

Best Season and Time for Manaslu Circuit Trekking

The ideal time to embark on the Manaslu Circuit Trek (also called the Manaslu Round Trek) is during the Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November) seasons. These peak windows offer stable high-altitude weather, comfortable daytime temperatures, and clear, unobstructed mountain views.

      Spring Season (March to May)

Spring, particularly April, is widely considered one of the best months for high-altitude trekking in Nepal.

      • Temperatures & Climate: Moderate daytime temperatures in the mid-hills range from 4°C to 18°C (39°F–64°F), making daily trekking comfortable. High camps still see freezing night conditions.

      • Trail Highlights: Lower forests burst into full bloom with red, pink, and white rhododendrons. Crisp morning skies provide breathtaking views of Mount Manaslu (8,163m) and surrounding peaks before light pre-monsoon afternoon haze rolls in.

      Autumn Season (September to November)

Autumn is the most popular window for crossing Larkya La Pass (5,106m / 16,752ft) due to crystal-clear, post-monsoon air quality.

      • Temperatures & Climate: Valley daytime temperatures average between 8°C and 20°C (46°F–68°F). High-altitude nights drop below freezing, averaging around -3°C to -10°C.

      • Trail Highlights: Outstanding visibility makes autumn perfect for mountain photography and sightseeing. Trails are dry and secure, and the season coincides with major local Hindu and Buddhist cultural festivals.

      Off-Peak Seasons

      • Winter (December to February): Severe high-altitude cold (dropping between -10°C and -20°C) and heavy snowfall frequently block Larkya La Pass. Teahouses above Samagaun often close for the season. While late February can occasionally suit experienced trekkers seeking solitude, winter trekking is generally not recommended.

      • Monsoon / Summer (June to August): Heavy rainfall creates muddy trails, active landslide risks through the Budhi Gandaki gorge, and leech infestations. Cloud cover obscures mountain panoramas, making monsoon trekking unsafe.

Manaslu Base Camp Trek vs. Manaslu Circuit Trek: How They Connect

When comparing the Manaslu Base Camp Trek vs. Manaslu Circuit Trek, it is important to understand that the base camp is not a standalone route, but an essential side excursion integrated into the classic 14-day Manaslu Circuit Trek itinerary. This combination creates one of the most complete high-altitude adventures in the Manaslu Conservation Area, pairing rich Tibetan cultural immersion with close-up Himalayan views.

      Strategic Importance for Altitude Acclimatization

The excursion to Manaslu Base Camp is completed from Samagaun Village (3,530 m / 11,581 ft) during a mandatory altitude acclimatization day. By following the proven "climb high, sleep low" mountain safety principle, trekkers gain significant elevation during the day and return to sleep at a lower altitude. This process accelerates red blood cell production, improves oxygen efficiency, and dramatically reduces the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) before tackling the challenging crossing of Larkya La Pass (5,106 m / 16,752 ft).

Trail Overview Samagaun to Manaslu Base Camp

      • Distance & Duration: A challenging 12–14 km (7.5–8.5 miles) round-trip day hike taking roughly 6 to 8 hours.

      • Elevation Gain: Ascends 1,270 meters from Samagaun (3,530 m) up to Manaslu Base Camp (4,800 m / 15,748 ft).

      • Terrain Conditions: The trail climbs steeply through alpine juniper bushes, glacial moraines, and rocky ridges, passing near the turquoise waters of Birendra Lake.

      • Summit Rewards: Reaching base camp provides front-row views of Mount Manaslu’s North Face (8,163 m), active glaciers, seracs, and real expedition tent camps during the autumn and spring climbing seasons.

How to Reach the Manaslu Circuit Trek

Getting to the Manaslu Circuit Trek is a scenic overland adventure through Nepal’s mid-hill landscapes. Because there are no domestic airports or flight paths into the region, all access is via high-clearance road transport. Standard Manaslu trekking packages include private 4WD land transport to guarantee safe, comfortable logistics whether you are starting from Kathmandu or Pokhara.

      Arrival and Departure Logistics

      • Kathmandu Hub: Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), a private vehicle transfers you directly to your hotel in Thamel. On your return, airport drop-off ensures a smooth international departure.

      • Pokhara Hub: For travelers already in Pokhara, private transfer options directly connect the lakeside city to the trail starting point via the Prithvi Highway, as well as providing easy return access post-trek.

Starting Point: Kathmandu or Pokhara to Machha Khola

The journey to the official trailhead at Machha Khola (930m) spans approximately 160 km from Kathmandu or 170 km from Pokhara.

      • From Pokhara: Drive east via Mugling or Dumre along the highway toward Gorkha and Arughat before connecting to the river gorge track.

      • Vehicle Preference: A high-clearance 4WD Scorpio or Hilux jeep is strongly recommended for the final unpaved sections, water crossings, and narrow cliffside bends leading into Machha Khola.

Return Route: Tilije / Dharapani to Kathmandu or Pokhara

Upon completing the trek and descending past Larkya La Pass, you reach Tilije (2,300m) or Dharapani (1,860m). From here, you have two flexible destination choices:

      • Local Connecting Shuttle: A short local 4WD jeep drive connects Tilije/Dharapani down to Besisahar.

      • Option A — Return to Kathmandu: A private vehicle or tourist bus takes you from Besisahar back to Kathmandu (approx. 6–7 hours via the Prithvi Highway).

      • Option B — Onward to Pokhara: From Besisahar, a private transfer or local shuttle takes just 2.5 to 3.5 hours to reach Pokhara, making it the perfect post-trek destination for rest and recovery by the lake

      14-Day Manaslu Circuit Trek Duration

The Manaslu Circuit Trek duration provides the ideal balance between physical challenge, cultural immersion, and proper altitude safety. Designed to follow the "climb high, sleep low" principle, this complete 14-day itinerary gives your body ample time to adapt to thin air before taking on the iconic Larkya La Pass (5,106 m).

      • Stir-Fried & Carb-Dense Dishes: Fried rice, chowmein, spaghetti, macaroni, and various potato dishes (fried potatoes, potato curry, or mashed potatoes).

      • Western Comforts: In lower and mid-altitude villages like Namrung and Samagaun, select teahouses may offer basic vegetable or cheese pizzas and pancakes.

Food Availability & Pricing by Altitude

      • Lower Altitudes (Soti Khola to Jagat): Menus are extensive, ingredients are fresh, and food prices are relatively inexpensive (approx. $3 to $6 per meal).

      • Mid Altitudes (Deng to Samagaun): Good variety is still available, including local bakeries and specialized dishes, with moderate price increases due to porter transport logistics.

      • High Altitudes (Samdo & Dharmasala): Menus narrow down strictly to essentials like Dal Bhat, noodle soups, garlic soup (great for altitude adaptation), and basic breakfasts. Prices rise significantly (approx. $8 to $12+ per meal) because all food supplies must be carried up on foot or by animal caravans.

      Crucial Food & Health Tips

      • Go Vegetarian Above Namrung: Fresh meat is not refrigerated and is carried up over multiple days without cooling systems. Sticking to vegetarian meals, lentils, and eggs at higher elevations drastically lowers the risk of food poisoning.

      • Drink Safe Water: Avoid drinking tap or stream water directly. Use water purification tablets, a UV sterilizer, or buy boiled/filtered water from teahouses.

      • Carry Cash & Personal Snacks: There are no ATMs beyond Arughat. Carry sufficient Nepalese Rupees (NPR) in small denominations. Pack energy bars, chocolate, and trail mix from Kathmandu for quick trail snacks between meals.

Electricity & Charging on the Manaslu Circuit Trek

Electricity is available at most teahouses along the Manaslu Trek, but it relies heavily on solar panels and becomes increasingly limited or weather-dependent at higher elevations. To conserve power, high-altitude lodges frequently turn off electricity during the day and reserve stored power strictly for dining hall lighting in the evening.

Charging devices above Namrung usually incurs a fee ranging from NPR 200 to 500 (approx. $1.50 to $3.50 USD) per hour or per device, with high-capacity power banks costing slightly more.

To keep devices running, pack a 10,000 to 20,000 mAh power bank, carry a fold-out solar panel, keep electronics inside your sleeping bag at night to protect batteries from freezing temperatures, and keep phones in airplane mode with battery-saver enabled while trekking.

Physical Preparation and Altitude Safety for the Manaslu Circuit Trek

Embarking on the Manaslu Circuit Trek requires physical endurance, mental toughness, and a proactive approach to high-altitude safety. Ascending from 930 meters up to 5,106 meters (16,752 feet) at the summit of Larkya La Pass, this remote Himalayan journey challenges even experienced trekkers.

Required Fitness Level and Physical Challenges

The Manaslu Circuit is classified as a strenuous high-altitude trek. While it does not require technical climbing skills, you must be prepared for continuous daily exertion in rugged mountain terrain.

      Trail Challenges

      • High Altitude & Thin Air: As oxygen levels decrease above 3,500 meters, physical exertion feels exponentially harder. Proper pacing and acclimatization are mandatory.

      • Sustained Daily Walking: Trekkers walk between 5 to 8 hours daily over steep vertical steps, uneven stone staircases, and loose gravel moraines.

      • The Larkya La Pass Crossing: The most demanding day of the trek involves an early pre-dawn start (3:00–4:00 AM), 8 to 10 hours of continuous walking, sub-zero temperatures, and navigating snow or ice sections.

      8-Week Physical Fitness Training Program

To complete the trek safely and comfortably, start training at least 1 to 2 months before departure:

      • Cardiovascular Conditioning (4–5x per week): Engage in 30 to 60 minutes of continuous aerobic exercise—such as running, cycling, swimming, or stair climbing—to build heart and lung capacity.

      • Leg & Core Strength Training: Perform squats, lunges, step-ups, calf raises, and planks to prepare your knees, legs, and core for steep ascents and heavy downhill braking.

      • Practice Hiking with a Weighted Pack: Complete weekend hikes on varied, hilly terrain while wearing a loaded backpack (6–10 kg) to condition your back, shoulders, and legs.

      • Flexibility & Balance: Incorporate regular stretching routines or yoga to improve joint mobility and prevent muscle strain on uneven trails.

Preventing Altitude Sickness (Acute Mountain Sickness)

Altitude Sickness (AMS) can affect anyone regardless of age or physical fitness. Because oxygen density drops by nearly 50% above 5,000 meters, taking altitude precautions seriously is essential.

      Essential Altitude Precautions

      • Follow "Bistari, Bistari" (Slow & Steady): Ascend at a slow, measured pace, especially when hiking above 3,000 meters. Avoid rushing or overexerting yourself.

      • Hydration & Nutrition: Drink 3 to 4 liters of water daily and consume warm, carbohydrate-dense meals to fuel your body’s metabolism at altitude.

      • Recognize Early Symptoms: Be alert for early signs of AMS, including persistent headaches, loss of appetite, fatigue, nausea, dizziness, or insomnia.

      • Communicate & Descend: Always report any early symptoms to your licensed trekking guide immediately. Never ascend further with symptoms of altitude sickness. If symptoms worsen, descending to a lower altitude is the only effective treatment.

Which Mountains Can Be Seen on the Manaslu Circuit Trek?

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is renowned as one of Nepal’s most dramatic high-altitude journeys. While the trail leads you through lush river gorges, alpine forests, and ancient Tibetan-influenced villages, its primary highlight is the continuously changing panoramic view of giant snow-capped Himalayan peaks.

As you ascend through the Budhi Gandaki valley, the terrain shifts from narrow, steep gorges below Namrung to vast, sunlit glacial valleys around Lho and Samagaun.

Major Mountains Visible Along the Route

During the trek, you will witness dozens of Himalayan summits ranging from technical 6,000-meter trekking peaks to massive 8,000-meter giants:

      • Mount Manaslu (8,163 m / 26,781 ft): The world’s 8th highest mountain and the undisputed crown jewel of the trek. Outstanding views begin in Lho and dominate the skyline through Samagaun and Samdo.

      • Himal Chuli (7,893 m) & Ngadi Chuli (7,871 m): Also known as Peak 29, these two massive summits guard the southern flank of the Manaslu range.

      • Manaslu North (7,157 m): A prominent sub-peak standing directly beside the main peak, clearly visible from the Samagaun valley floor.

      • Shiring Himal (7,165 m) & Buddha Himal (6,692 m): Towering peaks that border the lower and middle sections of the Nubri Valley.

      • Himlung Himal (7,126 m) & Cheo Himal (6,812 m): Dramatic, razor-sharp summits along the border ridge, best seen approaching and crossing Larkya La Pass.

      • Gyaji Kang (7,038 m) & Nemjung (7,140 m): Remote Peri Himal peaks dominating the horizon as you descend toward Bimthang.

      • Samdo Peak (6,335 m) & Larke Peak (6,249 m): Striking, pyramid-shaped trekking peaks that rise above the high-altitude shelters at Samdo and Dharmasala.

Best Mountain Viewpoints on Manaslu Circuit Trail

      • Lho Village (3,180 m): Home to the famous Ribung Monastery, Lho provides the first clear, unobstructed view of Mount Manaslu’s double-peak summit at sunrise.

      • Samagaun (3,530 m): A wide alpine valley offering front-row views of Manaslu, its northern glacier, and surrounding icefalls.

      • Pungyen Gompa (Day Hike): A rewarding side trip from Samagaun leading directly beneath the sheer, towering East Face of Mount Manaslu.

      • Larkya La Pass (5,106 m): The highest point of the trek delivers a breathtaking 360-degree panorama encompassing Himlung Himal, Cheo Himal, Gyaji Kang, Kang Guru, and even distant peaks of the Annapurna Massif (such as Annapurna II).

      • Bimthang (3,590 m): Located on the descent, Bimthang offers a magnificent amphitheater view of the western face of Manaslu alongside towering glaciers.
